A new genus of deep-sea solenocerid shrimp (decapoda: penaeoidea) from papua new guinea ArchiMer

A new genus and species of deep-sea shrimp, Maximiliaeus odoceros, was collected from the Solomon Sea off Papua New Guinea. This penaeoid has a characteristic carapace: bearing large teeth on its entire dorsal border, and the presence of three parallel carinae that nearly run the entire length of the lateral carapace surface. Phylogenetic analysis using PEPCK and NaK sequences confirmed that this new taxon belongs to Solenoceridae.

A new species of Macrostomion Szépligeti (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Rogadinae) from Papua New Guinea, with notes on the biology of the genus Naturalis

Macrostomion gnathothlibi spec. nov. is described from a series reared gregariously from a larva of the sphingid moth Gnathothlibus eratus eras (Boisduval) collected in Papua New Guinea. Dedanima Cameron, 1903, is synonymised with Macrostomion Szépligeti, 1900. A further four gregarious broods of Macrostomion are noted, three certainly and one probably reared from mummified larvae or prepupae of Sphingidae, from which it appears that Macrostomion species may all be gregarious parasitoids of Sphingidae.

A taxonomic revision of the genus Dolianthus (Rubiaceae) Naturalis

A taxonomic revision of Dolianthus C.H. Wright (Rubiaceae-Psychotrieae) is presented, including a key to species, full descriptions, distribution maps, and a list of specimens examined. Eleven species are transferred from Amaracarpus to Dolianthus, resulting in ten new combinations. Two species are described as new to science: D. kairoi and D. ovatifolius. In total, thirteen species are included in Dolianthus. Dolianthus is endemic to the highlands (montane to subalpine and alpine zones) of Papua New Guinea.

Tropical forests in developing countries are increasingly being valued for their role in carbon sequestration. Large quantities of fresh produce can be grown in the Highlands provinces of Papua New Guinea, and this produce is then marketed to a range of markets, including the coastal cities of Port Moresby and Lae. However, it is often argued that the marketing system performs poorly, and various reasons for this are cited. In this paper, the results of a study on the marketing of smallholder produce originating in the Highlands provinces and destined for a range of markets, including the coastal cities, are presented. An introduction to the flora of the Milne Bay Archipelago Naturalis

The term Milne Bay Archipelago is used to include Goodenough, Fergusson and Normanby Islands – collectively the d’Entrecasteau Islands, the islands of the Louisiade Archipelago, Missima, Rossel and Sudest Islands and the two northern islands, the Trobriands and Woodlark. All are very complex with many small islands, often unnamed. Due to their geographic isolation the islands have many endemic species. So far 139 have been described. Of particular interest is the genus Rosselia, collected only twice from Rossel Island. This monotypic genus was placed, with many questions, in the Burseraceae and its current position is uncertain. Ashmore Trough in the western Gulf of Papua (GoP) represents an outstanding modern example of a tropical mixed siliciclastic-carbonate depositional system where significant masses of both river-borne silicates and bank-derived neritic carbonates accumulate. In this study, we examine how benthic foraminiferal populations within Ashmore Trough vary in response to sea level-driven paleoenvironmental changes, particularly organic matter and sediment supply. Caridean shrimps (Crustacea, Decapoda) from seagrass habitats in Hansa Bay, Papua New Guinea Naturalis

Five species of caridean shrimps collected from seagrass habitats at Hansa Bay, on the northern coastline of Papua New Guinea are reported. Four species are new to the fauna of Papua New Guinea. Morphological details of Nikoides danae, Latreutes pymoeus and L. porcinus are discussed and compared to previous records. The previously undescribed male secondary sexual appendices of N. danae and L. pymoeus are described.

Description of Idiocnemis patriciae spec. nov. from Papua New Guinea (Odonata: Platycnemididae), with new distributional records of other Idiocnemis species Naturalis

Idiocnemis patriciae spec. nov. is described from lowland rainforests of the Dark-End Lumber and Lakekamu regions in Gulf Province, Papua New Guinea. Biogeographically, the new species is near-endemic to the Papuan Gulf Coastal Lowlands area of endemism. Notes on the habitat of the new species and on a female specimen from the Lakekamu Basin tentatively assigned to it, are included. The distributions of I. australis Gassmann, I. chloropleura Lieft inck and I. kimminsi Lieft inck are updated. I. chloropleura is recorded from Yapen island for the first time. A revised key to the males of the Idiocnemis inornata species-group is provided.

Economic benefits to Papua New Guinea and Australia from the biological control of banana skipper (Erionota thrax) AgEcon

Larvae of the butterfly Erionota thrax, the banana skipper, destroy the leaves of bananas by eating them and forming massive protective rolls of leaf tissue. They were first observed in north-western Papua New Guinea in 1983 and over the next 6 years spread throughout the mainland at the rate of up to 500 km/year. E. thrax has also spread across the ocean to the east, to invade New Britain, Duke of York and New Ireland islands, and possibly Bougainville. As the banana skipper spread, it destroyed an average of some 60% of banana leaves, leading to both a serious delay in fruit maturation and reduced weight of banana bunches. Stochastic dominance analysis was used to assess export performance in Papua New Guinea from 1960 to 1999. A country with abundant natural resources, Papua New Guinea was able to experience significant growth in total export values throughout the final four decades of the 20th century, with each succeeding decade stochastically dominating the previous one. The expansion of mineral and energy exports from the early 1970s was the major source of this growth. The powerful influence of an expanding minerals and energy sector must nevertheless be of concern in that this sector and other non-agricultural resource sectors comprise mainly extractive or quasi-extractive industries given the production practices that currently exist. It is the second genus belonging to the Braconidae reported to live in Ficus-syconia.

Iron sources and dissolved-particulate interactions in the seawater of the Western Equatorial Pacific, iron isotope perspectives ArchiMer

This work presents iron isotope data in the western equatorial Pacific. Marine aerosols and top core margin sediments display a slightly heavy Fe isotopic composition (Fe-56) of 0.330.11 (2SD) and 0.140.07, respectively. Samples reflecting the influence of Papua New Guinea runoff (Sepik River and Rabaul volcano water) are characterized by crustal values. In seawater, Fe is mainly supplied in the particulate form and is found with a Fe-56 between -0.49 and 0.34 +/- 0.07 parts per thousand. The particulate Fe seems to be brought mainly by runoff and transported across continental shelves and slopes. Aerosols are suspected to enrich the surface Vitiaz Strait waters, while hydrothermal activity likely enriched New Ireland waters. Dissolved Fe isotopic ratios...

The Mama Lus Frut scheme was established to increase the productivity of smallholder palm-oil plantations in Papua New Guinea. ACIAR project ASEM/1999/084, ‘Improving Productivity of the Smallholder Oil Palm Sector in Papua New Guinea: a Study of Biophysical and Socioeconomic Interactions’, included an assessment of the impact of the Mama Lus Frut scheme. In view of preparing a Flora of the Seaweeds of N. Papua New Guinea, material was collected by scuba-diving along the coast of Madang Province in June-August 1980 and July-August 1986. Marine green algae (Chlorophyta) from the north coast of Papua New Guinea OMA

The marine benthic green algae of the north coast of Papua New Guinea (mainly from Madang province) are documented, based on collections made by the first author between 1980 and 1990. All records (118 taxa) are listed with bibliographic, taxonomic, nomenclatural and biogeographical notes. Identification keys are added for genera represented by at least two species. Representatives of the Pseudocodiaceae and some Udoteaceae are illustrated. The green algal flora of the north coast appears to be much richer than that of the south coast where 72 taxa, including 19 unchecked records from literature, are recorded from the Port Moresby area.
